My last few posts have been kind of heavy.  My heart has been kind of heavy.  So, please allow me now to indulge myself in all of my night-time web browsing and make a post about beautiful things I would buy myself for Christmas if I had unlimited funds.  And time.  And space for things.

There you have it.  My most superficial and greedy post of the year.  Every year.  I get a kick out of making a list of things I can't afford.  I think that might be kind of weird.  We are also in desperate need of new bedding but I haven't taken the time to look deeply into the bedding sections of my favorite websites yet.  Soon.

California

A few photos from our recent trip to California to celebrate the life of my Uncle Bob.

Mom, Uncle Mel, Aunt Marlys and I flew into Oakland and then traveled to Napa where we were fortunate enough to stay in a beautiful home that belongs to some friends of Uncle Bob's.  Seriously beautiful and SO SO kind of them to allow us all to stay there, along with Aunt Sherri and Amber.

Its weird how you return home from a trip, and people ask you how your vacation was, and its strange to say that you went for a funeral but that it was a really good trip.  I wish hugely that we all could have gathered under much different circumstances, but it was so great to be around family.  Its not every day that a girl gets to stay up till the wee hours with her aunts and cousins and just talk. And listen. And laugh. And Melissa opened her home to us for many great meals and wine and a place to be together.

A cross that Uncle Bob made for his church

A few of the pretties in our "home"

Still thinking of Uncle Bob, Aunt Jan, Melissa, Jessica and the grandkids.  They lost a terrific man.  Be on the look-out for a movie about his life, though:)  It will be a good one.
Want to leave you with something I remember the pastor saying at the memorial service..."The world is too dangerous and too beautiful for anything but love."  That really stayed with me.  I think I have said it to myself every day since then.  Love.

Such a bittersweet Thanksgiving

Yesterday was Thanksgiving.  Bet y'all knew that.  If you are anything like me, you still feel slightly uncomfortably full.  Last year, I think I made a list of things to be thankful for, both big and small.  I love doing things like that.  I actually have a nice little notebook that I jot a few things down in every morning (unless I oversleep, which is often.)  There are millions of things to be thankful for this year, but in our family we are pretty focused on just one, and that is my Uncle Bob.  What an awesome guy.  For most of my life, he and my Aunt Jan and their 2 daughters (Melissa and Jessica) have lived in Napa, CA.  He is a retired pilot.  He is one of my most favorite people on earth.  I don't know all the medical technicalities of the situation, but last  week something happened that caused areas of his brain to not receive adequate oxygen and he went into a sort of coma-like state.  Now, his wife, children, grandchildren and friends are sitting by his side and saying their last words, praying for peace and comfort, sharing stories and beautiful memories and tears.  The last time I cried writing a blog post was when Luther died.  Oddly enough, the 2 stories relate more than you would think.  Uncle Bob and Aunt Jan were responsible for our desire to have a basset hound, years ago.  Brad and I had traveled to Napa for Jessica and Alex's wedding, and we got to spend lots of time with their basset, Molly.  And when I was young and visited with my parents, they had Herbie.  I loved those dogs.

Please say a prayer for the Blair family.  I am so blessed to have such a wonderful uncle, with such fond memories.  I hope very much to have the opportunity to see him one more time, even if it happens when his life here is over.  Also, this is a little sappier than I tend to be, but make sure you tell your family and friends that you love them.  Often.

I borrowed this picture from Aunt Jan's facebook.  Look at those beautiful grandkids!

And then I went running

Inspirational graffiti on my run:)

I had made a little note to myself in my planner at the beginning of November that if I was going to run the full marathon, I needed to make a training plan.  When I saw that a few weeks ago, I ignored it.  I was "too busy, too tired, too out of shape, too slow, too old".  Some combination of those excuses.  But then this weekend I had some time to myself and a beautiful day, so I decided to go for a run, to assess the situation.  And here is what I have decided...........I am going to register for the full marathon in December when registration opens.  What?!?  Something is wrong with me.  I am suuuuper nervous but at the same time, pretty excited.  Its not like I went out and ran 15 miles this weekend.  I did 6.  At well over 9 minute miles.  The thing that made me decide to take the plunge was how good it felt.  If I hadn't wanted to see the second half of the Husker football game, I could have easily done 10 miles.  And its only November!  Here's the deal with me and running.  Or me and sports for that matter.  I am not coordinated.  I am not competitive.  I am not fast.  Therefore, team sports and I do not mix.  I gave it a shot.  I played softball, soccer, volleyball, and basketball all at some point in my youth.  And I apologize to anyone who had to be on a team with me:) I was told by our family physician when I was young that I had bad knees and would never be a runner.  So I guess I never even really considered sports that I actually may have been able to do, like cross country or track.  I mean, I would not have been good at them, but I could have participated.  But I never even tried.  Then I became a grown up, I guess and needed a stress relieving hobby so I started running.  Its a very cheap hobby, thank goodness!  And I'm also kind of a stubborn grown up, so when I started thinking back about that doctor (maybe some of you remember him.  He had all those marathon posters in his office?) I thought, "I'll show him."  So I ran the Lincoln Half Marathon in 2008 and then again in 2011.  But what I really want to do?  The full marathon.  And then, if my body isn't destroyed by that, someday I would like to do an ultramarathon.  And a trail marathon.  And travel around the country doing marathons.  Ok, I might be getting a little carried away, but you get the idea.
So, I am sharing this on my blog in hopes of giving myself some major accountability.  Like, if you are watching at mile 20 on May 5th and you have waited for over 4 hours and you don't see me, you should give me a major guilt trip.  I am really going to need help from my family if I'm going to do this right.  Like, lots of time to run.  Lots of support to eat as healthy as possible and get as much rest as possible.  We will revisit this topic in a few months, I would suppose.  But for now, I better get to meal and workout planning!

All kinds of stuff and things

A quick look at things, through pictures.  Early October at Martin's Apple Orchard.  Great place to take the family in the fall and we got a bag of the BEST apples I have ever tasted.

And then I put a picture on Instagram and Anderson Cooper liked it.  And I got all excited.  I mean, its ANDERSON COOPER.  I'm sure he operates his show's Instagram all by himself, right?!?

Then there were pumpkin flavored things.  Like pancakes.

And scones.

Then Willa and I spent an afternoon shopping with Tosha.  And enjoying Happy Hour.  I'm sure that Happy Hour is not a proper noun but I feel it is important enough to capitalize, ok?

Then there were presidential and vice-presidential debates to be enjoyed with warm, spiced apple cider drinks and family.

Then we pulled off a fun surprise for a good friend.  And this was the night that prompted the new 2 Drink Maximum Rule that I have in place for myself.  And it also taught me not to take shots of vodka and then play tag.

Then there was the pumpkin patch.  JK's to be exact.

Brad and I had a few nights out.  The Yelawolf concert at the Bourbon Theater

And the Hers Launch Party at Voda

Willa, Borne, and Wash at the Hoffman's Halloween party

And Halloween!  We love trick or treating in the Highlands.

Fort building.

My first movie with Willa - Wreck It, Ralph!

Aaaaand...Voting!  I was going to do a whole post about the election, but Facebook got me so flustered about the whole thing that all I will say is, its never a good idea to call me (or imply that I might be) lazy or dependent on the government.

In a big 'ole nutshell, that's what we have been up to the past several weeks, aside from being busy busy at our jobs.  And Willa has been busy just getting bigger and smarter.  It is so much fun to watch her learn and also to observe her making friends.  She has got counting and abc's down, really is starting to grasp days of the week and shapes, is trying to actually draw things and color in the lines rather than just making big blobs of color, remembers the words to songs they sing in school, can compare and contrast the Michael C. Hall of Dexter with the one of 6 Feet Under, knew the names and faces of both presidential candidates, and is super excited to get big so she can go hunting with Grandpa with her very own gun!

Join me in a good read

I used to be such a reader.  I'm gonna say that changed when Willa was born.  There just isn't as much time for sitting and reading.  Its getting a little bit better as she gets a little older, there are more times that she is content playing while I sit and read.  I had thought that working nights would provide me with ample reading time, which I guess technically it does, but if I start reading too early, I get even drowsier than I do if I find other ways to pass the time.  I am very excited about a book club that a friend recently formed and wanted to share it with any of my blog readers who love books!  We are "discussing" the books through a blog that Tiffany set up, so anyone anywhere can participate.  And, we are discussing one chapter per week so if you are slow like me, you can keep up.  And if you aren't slow, you can still be reading other things as well.  The first book we are reading is called The Hole in our Gospel and we are just now on chapter 1 so feel free to join in!

Aaaaand...there went nearly my entire night shift.

A million thank you's to the lovely and talented Nicole at Making It Lovely for sharing this link.  I only made it about a third of the way through the essays tonight, but I will read the rest.  And soon.  I adore election time.  And I have no problem with telling anyone who will listen that I am a left, left, leftie, liberal, hippie, vegetarian, gun-hating, social-contract loving, my-uterus-my-choice, wind energy worshiping, help-the-least-of-those-among-us, health-care/marriage/civil rights/equal pay-for-all, CRAZY PERSON.  Its just how my brain works.  I've tried to make my brain be at least a little bit more moderate, so as not to seem so crazy, but it just can't.  I try not to be too in your face about it out in the real world.  But this is my blog, darn it, so I can be as De-de-de-democratic as I want.  If you have even the slightest inclination, you should check out some of these essays.  Of the ones I read, a few were vulgar, mostly the ones written by comedians.  But most were very intelligent, well written, some very personal explanations as to why the individuals are voting for Barack Obama for a second term.  One of my favorites was #25, written by Colin Meloy of The Decemberists, on the changes that have been made under this presidency that have assisted his family in receiving the therapies needed for their autistic son.  He makes a great point here " regardless of your tax bracket, if you’re parenting a kid with special needs, you need help."  So very, very true.
Another of my favorites was #34 by author Elizabeth Gilbert on the nature of Barack Obama's character.  Every word of her essay rang true with me.  Sure, there have been other political figures that I have felt confident in voting for.  For pete sake, I may start a Bill Clinton fan club some day.  But, President Obama is the first politician I have felt admiration for, as far as character goes.  His calm, poised demeanor is a breath of fresh air.  His commitment to all classes of people is admirable.  And for me, bottom line, there is a very strong gut feeling about our two candidates.  I have a Facebook friend who worded her feelings about Mitt Romney in a way that made me laugh, but also kind of sums up my feelings toward him..."You know how dogs seem to have a 6th sense about people, well I would bet money that if you put a dog on the presidential debate stage that Romney would be eaten alive..."  Now of course, I don't wish for Mitt to be eaten by anything, but I personally agree with the sentiment:)  May the best candidate win, and in the words of Andrew Sean Greer (essay #5) "Supreme court, supreme court, supreme court!"

Dirty Girl (Mud Run)

I did a mud run with these 2 lovely ladies a few weeks ago.  A mud run is definitely something you can't do without a smile on your face.  Very much looking forward to doing others in the future!  And many thanks to Tiff for mixing me a few drinks afterward:)

School update

Now that we are more than a month into preschool, we can officially say that we love it!  If you or anyone you know is looking for a place to send their little ones, I would HIGHLY recommend Dimensions.  Worth every penny.  Everyone there is so nice and they have done a great job with Willa and she is learning more than I would have thought possible!  We had parent/teacher conferences the other day and I just couldn't stop smiling the whole time Mrs. Katt was talking about Willa!  Such a nice lady...(Mrs. Katt.  And Willa)  We are so proud of our little stink-bomb.  The 2 teachers, Mrs. Katt and Ms. Miller, often email/text us pictures of what Willa is up to during the day, so here are a few...

One thing that we have heard from Willa's teachers is how focused she is on her tasks.  For example, this dot picture which utilized a gajillion dot stickers.  And that she worked on for most of the day.

This is from a mini-field trip the kids took to the Sunken Gardens, just down the street from school.  The kids were matching paint strips with holes punched in them to the plants.  What a cool idea for learning all kinds of colors!

Then they drew pictures of the plants in their journals.

Watering one of the school gardens.
